The global community is vast. We’ve sampled sandwiches from over 30 countries around the world and can now confidently rank our favorites. Also, we’ve consumed a great many sandwiches.
Sandwiches may seem like a strange choice. The first thing we love about these dishes is that we can eat them with our hands and have a great time doing it. Moreover, sandwiches are a global culinary standard; I can think of only Antarctica that doesn’t boast its own national sandwich.
As a nation, we proclaim our undying devotion to the seemingly humble sandwich. That’s why a lot of us choose sandwiches when we see them on a menu or at a food stand.
It doesn’t matter to us whether they are stuffed with meat, cheese, or vegetables. We enjoy sandwiches just as much as the rest of the world.
Sandwiches from Around the World That We Love
While traveling the world, we have tried to “enjoy every sandwich,” as the late Warren Zevon once urged. During my three years of nonstop nomadic travel across four continents, I found deeper meaning in this strategy.
For the duration of those three years, the traveler visited two of the world’s greatest sandwich cities, Philadelphia and Lisbon. We gorged ourselves on as many sandwiches as we could manage in the breaks. How many are there? Amounting to enough that they consider themselves sandwich experts.
We could, of course, compile a list of every sandwich in the world, complete with a boring stock photo, but you can find that information in any number of online encyclopedias. Instead, we’ve limited the subject matter of this piece to sandwiches that we’ve actually consumed. Even the pictures are the same.
