RJ White is a professional football expert in his field and has come up with a few predictions for the Patriots vs. Giants preseason matchup on Thursday.

Since they’ve played the NFC East rival New York Giants more often than any other preseason opponent, the New England Patriots know a thing or two about them. However, New England has not fared well in these 30 matchups, as evidenced by their 19 losses, 11 of which have occurred in the last 16. When the Patriots host the Giants in the first preseason game of the 2022 NFL season, they’ll be looking to end a losing streak of three straight home exhibition games in the series. Last year, New England’s 22-20 road victory over New York was only the third time in the last 11 preseason games that New England had beaten New York.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. ET from Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The current Giants vs. Patriots odds at Caesars Sportsbook have New York as a 1.5-point favorite, with 34 points listed as the Over/Under. Check out what NFL expert R.J. White has to say on SportsLine before you make any final decisions about the Patriots vs. Giants or the upcoming 2022 NFL preseason.

How come the Giants can cover

Unfortunately for New York, quarterback Daniel Jones hasn’t developed into the No. 6 overall pick’s dream. The 25-year-old Duke alum has little time left to develop into the team’s ideal player, so he will likely be given every chance to prove himself, starting with the upcoming preseason opener. Although injuries limited Jones to just 11 games in ’21, he had a good postseason game against the Patriots, completing 17 of 22 passes for 135 yards and a touchdown with just one interception.

Tyrod Taylor, who was signed to a two-year deal in March after throwing for 966 yards and five touchdowns in six starts for Houston last season, will put pressure on Jones. The 33-year-old has played in 78 games for the NFL, 53 of which he has started. He was at his best with Buffalo from 2015-17, when he threw for 8,857 yards, 51 touchdowns, and only 16 interceptions in 44 games. Davis Webb is another player who should see action on Thursday; he and new head coach Brian Daboll worked together for three seasons in Buffalo, where Daboll was the offensive coordinator.

The reason the Patriots can get the money

Several of New England’s offensive rookies, including quarterback Bailey Zappe, will get significant playing time this season. The 23-year-old quarterback spent the previous three seasons at Houston Baptist before being selected in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. He set FBS records with 5,967 yards passing and 62 touchdown passes last season while playing for Western Kentucky. Zappe led the FBS with a completion percentage of 69.3 on 687 attempts and drove in 3 touchdowns for the Hilltoppers.

Pierre Strong Jr., another fourth-round pick, could be a contributor for the Patriots on the ground, where he rushed for over 1,000 yards in three of his four seasons at South Dakota State, with his best year coming in 2021, when he rushed for 1,673 yards and 18 touchdowns. After being drafted in the second round in April, wide receiver Tyquan Thornton finally gets his chance to show off his lightning speed. The 22-year-old Baylor product had 62 receptions for 948 yards and 10 touchdowns for the Bears in 2021, and he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.28 seconds, good enough for third-fastest at the 2022 NFL combine.
