A recent study found that people should consume up to two scoops of ice cream a day to increase feelings of satisfaction

An investigation determined that the best choice is to make a bagel with raisins because they can be found on low glycemic diets.



Happy news for those of you who enjoy ice cream!

According to recent research out of Tufts University in Massachusetts, ice cream may actually be better for you than things like multigrain bagels and saltine crackers.

For the study, researchers from Tufts University’s Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy created a tool called the “Food Compass” to rate the nutritional value of any given food item on a scale from one to one hundred, with a higher score indicating a healthier option.

The study ranked an ice cream cone with nuts and chocolate ice cream at 37, a multigrain bagel with raisins at 19, and saltine crackers at 7.

The high scores for chocolate-covered almonds (60) and sweet-potato chips (50) are not surprising, but the high scores for plain Fritos chips (55) and whole grain frozen french toast (35) are. Cappuccino without the fat received the 69th spot.

According to the study’s lead and corresponding author, Dariush Mozaffarian, dean for policy at the Friedman School, the public is “pretty confused” about how to identify healthier choices in the grocery store, cafeteria, and restaurant. “Everyone from consumers to policymakers to the business community is looking for straightforward resources to help them make healthier lifestyle decisions,”

Snacks and sweets ranked dead last across all categories we looked at, with an average of 16. Vegetables and fruits, as well as legumes, nuts, and seeds, naturally rank high. An average of 43.2 was assigned to starchy vegetables.

The average score for sodas with added sugar was 27.6, while the score for drinks made entirely of fruit and vegetables was 67.

Overall, the study found that seafood (average score of 67) is the healthiest type of meat, followed by poultry (42.67) and beef (24.9).

Author Renata Micha, formerly of the Friedman School and now of the University of Thessaly, explains that “with its publicly available scoring algorithm, Food Compass can provide a nuanced approach to promoting healthy food choices,” which can inform consumer behavior, nutrition policy, scientific research, food industry practices, and socially based investment decisions.
