A US diplomat was killed while riding her bike in Ukraine

Just a day before the summer semester at Florida State University began, a 32-year-old bike rider was struck and killed while biking on her way to campus.

This week, a State Department employee was killed in Maryland while bicycling.

According to the Montgomery County Police Department, a 42-year-old woman named Sarah Joan Langenkamp was riding her bicycle when she was hit by a flatbed truck on the afternoon of August 25 in the 5200 block of River Road in Bethesda.

Langenkamp served as a diplomat at the American embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine. A number of agencies have listed her as the embassy’s chief of the International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs Section.

A Foreign Service officer, Sarah J. Langenkamp, has died, a State Department spokesperson confirmed to ABC News on Saturday. The State Department “offers its sincere condolences to Ms. Langenkamp’s family and friends.”

“Due to concerns about privacy and cooperation with law enforcement, we cannot comment further at this time. To learn more, please contact the Bethesda Police Department “a representative has stated.

Daniel Langenkamp, Langenkamp’s husband, was the embassy spokesperson in Kyiv. Reporting from earlier this year, CBS News detailed the Langenkamps’ sons’ efforts to reunite with their parents after being separated during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Just after 4 o’clock on Thursday, police were called to the scene of an accident. According to the preliminary findings of the Collision Reconstruction Unit, both the driver of the red 2014 Volvo flatbed truck and Lagenkamp were heading in the same direction just before the collision.

The driver, who has yet to be identified, was reportedly heading east when they struck Langenkamp as they turned right into the parking lot at 5244 River Road. A truck ran over Langenkamp, and he was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

As emergency crews from Montgomery Fire and Rescue and law enforcement worked to clear the scene of the crash on River Road, the road was closed.

As far as the Montgomery County Police Department is concerned, the investigation is still in progress. ABC News’ request for comment from the department was met with silence.

The death of Langenkamp is the second this year involving a bicyclist who worked for the State Department.

On July 20 in the Foggy Bottom neighborhood of Washington, DC, Shawn O’Donnell, a 40-year-old foreign service employee for the agency, was killed when he was hit by a Mack cement truck.

In the month of July, three people were killed in bicycle accidents in the city, including O’Donnell. Members of the community gathered in front of city hall to demand action, with many calling on Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser to implement her vision of achieving zero traffic deaths by 2024, as reported by ABC News affiliate WJLA.
