SOUTH PHILA (AP) — Edward Cabrera pitched well into the sixth inning, Tanner Scott got out of a jam in the ninth, and the Miami Marlins beat the Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 on Thursday to snap the Phillies’ seven-game winning streak.
Scott got the final out of the eighth by striking out pinch hitter J.T. Realmuto. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for him in the ninth, but he got Edmundo Sosa and Matt Vierling to strike out and got Brandon Marsh to ground out weakly to earn his 16th save in a 39-pitch outing.
Cabrera (3-0) and three relievers combined for a seven-hitter over 5 2/3 innings, during which he struck out six and walked two.
The victory over the Marlins, 4-3, was the Phillies’ best of the season. They came from behind with three runs in the eighth inning, and NL ERA leader Sandy Alcantara allowed all three. On Wednesday, the National League home run leader, Kyle Schwarber, had three hits and drove in two runs.
On Thursday, after Schwarber walked with two outs in the fifth inning, the starter decided to replace him with a pinch runner. After the game, the medical staff said he had strained his right calf slightly. Shortly after trying to steal second, Brandon Marsh was nabbed by catcher Nick Fortes.
The Phillies are 12-2 in their last 14 games and finished their homestand with a 6-1 record as they prepare for a weekend series against the NL East-leading New York Mets.
Keith Hernandez, a former Mets player and announcer who won 11 Gold Gloves, said, “I hate doing Phillie games,” so he will not be calling the weekend series. As Hernandez put it this week on TV, the Phillies “have always been, just, you know, not up to it” as far as fundamentals and defense are concerned.
On Thursday’s second inning, Hernandez may have had a valid point.
Error by first baseman Rhys Hoskins, who dropped a routine grounder and allowed Lewin Diaz to reach. Luke Williams hit a routine popup to second baseman Jean Segura, but Segura misplayed the ball and it fell for a single on the infield grass two batters later. Joey Wendle, a star player for the nearby West Chester Wildcats, drove in a run with a single to left field, giving his team a 1-0 lead and placing the blame for the unearned run on starter Kyle Gibson.
Gibson (7-5) got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first inning, but the Phillies were unable to come through with a game-winning hit. In the first and second innings, the Phillies failed to score any runs and left two runners on base.
Gibson started the sixth by striking out the first two hitters, but then he allowed two consecutive hits and a run-scoring wild pitch. When Diaz doubled in a run, the score was 3-0.
After franchise great and 2007 NL MVP Jimmy Rollins tweeted the day before that there were too many “empty seats” at Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies announced a crowd of 25,444 for the afternoon game. He lamented the absence of “sellouts” who “get the bank rocking” and “make Philadelphia the best sports town?!!”
Rollins reflects on the glory days of the 2009-2012 Phillies, when the team set a National League record by selling out 257 consecutive games. However, the Phillies haven’t been to the postseason since 2011 (the longest drought in the NL), have played poorly for the better part of the last decade, and have had to deal with rising ticket and concession prices.
As of the start of the season, the Phillies averaged 28,703 spectators per game, good for 15th in Major League Baseball.
On Friday, the Marlins will host Atlanta for the first of a four-game series. Braves right-hander Jake Odorizzi will face off against RHP Pablo Lopez (7-7, 3.57 ERA) (4-4, 3.76).
On Friday, the Rangers send LHP Andrew Suarez (8-5, 3.68) to the mound against the Mets’ RHP Max Scherzer in New York (8-2, 1.98). This season, between April 11 and May 29, the Mets have defeated the Phillies nine times, winning two of those contests. Since June 3, when Rob Thomson replaced the fired Joe Girardi as interim manager, the Phillies have gone 40-20.
