(The Square in the Center) Years after being wrongfully fired as a result of a contentious drug testing program, the two highest paid Boston police officers in 2021 each won court settlements totaling more than $1 million.
Jacqueline M. McGowan and Richard Beckers, two former officers, received payouts of $1.25 million and $1.26 million, respectively. The Center Square has looked into Boston’s city employees’ salaries until 2021.
A protracted litigation concerning the dismissal of 10 Boston police officers between 2001 and 2007 came to a close with Beckers and McGowan receiving compensation. The 10 officers were let go after cocaine use was detected in hair samples. Four of those ten officers’ dismissals were ultimately upheld.
After a panel determined that the hair tests did not satisfy the criteria for good cause termination, the remaining six appealed for back pay and several sought reinstatement, according to court documents.
According to court records, four of these six cops were paid back pay in 2017 and 2018.
According to a spokeswoman, urine analysis has replaced hair testing as the preferred method of drug testing by the Boston Police Department, which was contested in the complaint.
