GOP Will ‘Incarcerate’ Officials Who Approved FBI’s Trump Raid, Bannon Says

The right-wing Trump ally accused the Justice Department and FBI of acting like the Gestapo of Nazi Germany.

Conservative commentator Steve Bannon said on his podcast that those responsible for the FBI raid on former president Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, would be “incarcerated” by Republicans.

On Thursday’s episode of his War Room podcast, Bannon, who was Trump’s campaign manager in 2016 and an adviser to the White House for several months in 2017, criticized the raid on Trump’s home. His comments came as he was conducting an interview with former president Bill Clinton’s lawyer Christina Bobb.

Such a comprehensive investigation into a former president is unprecedented and represents the most serious legal action ever taken against a former chief executive.

Trump has previously admitted that he took National Archives-required paperwork to his Florida mansion. Information of a top secret nature, possibly related to national security, was reportedly included in the documents. Trump has denied wrongdoing and insisted he is working with authorities to return the materials, despite the fact that it is a federal crime to mishandle or improperly remove classified information.

Bannon has promised to begin “investigating,” “suing,” and “incarcerating” beginning in the new year. You’re running this place like the Gestapo, you lawbreaker. You’re attacking a sitting president of the United States…. Please produce the affidavit immediately. In Nazi Germany, the secret police were known as the Gestapo.

Bannon may have been alluding to the widespread belief that the Republican Party will regain the House of Representatives and possibly the Senate in the upcoming midterm elections on November 8. Some Republican lawmakers and leaders have even threatened impeachment as they vow to launch a series of investigations into President Joe Biden’s administration.

Bannon wrote on his Gettr profile on Thursday, “The New American Gestapo the FBI and the DoJ [Department of Justice] put themselves in this spot because of corruption, incompetence and malfeasance.”

FBI and DOJ officials said the warrant and property receipt were provided to Trump’s counsel, contradicting Bobb’s claims during the War Room segment.

Bobb declared, “I asked to see the warrant.” I encountered some resistance from them when I said that. I had to go to war with them to get it. I pretended to be a lawyer so I could demand to see the warrant, and they obliged. The affidavit detailing the probable cause upon which this order is based was sealed, meaning that I was denied access to it. That they don’t want the public to know what evidence supports their case speaks volumes.

The press office for Trump was contacted by Newsweek for their thoughts.

In brief comments to the press on Thursday, U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland responded forcefully to recent criticisms of the Justice Department and the FBI.

He repeated that the warrant had been issued by a judge who had found probable cause for the raid and that he had personally approved the decision to seek a search warrant in this matter.

Garland added that neither the Justice Department nor the FBI had issued a press release or announced the search, implying that they hoped to conduct the raid incognito. To his knowledge, Trump was the one who first confirmed and reported the raid to the public, as he himself stated.

Garland reaffirmed that Trump’s lawyer had received the warrant and property receipt. He revealed that the Department of Justice had requested their release from seal.

Garland remarked, “The Department does not take such a decision lightly.” When the rule of law is upheld, the law is enforced fairly and without exception. That’s exactly what the Justice Department is doing while I’m in charge.

The White House claims that Biden and other administration officials had no prior knowledge of the raid. They said it was improper for Biden to know about or have any input into Justice Department matters.

Trump has previously claimed that the raid was part of a “witch hunt” orchestrated by Democrats to get rid of him and his supporters. He claims the FBI’s move is an attempt to stop him from running for president again and that he is the victim of political persecution.

In July, a grand jury found Bannon guilty of contempt of Congress for ignoring a subpoena to testify before the House select committee looking into the riot that occurred on January 6, 2021, in the United States Capitol.

In August of 2020, he was indicted on charges of defrauding backers of a crowdfunding effort to fund construction of President Trump’s border wall with Mexico. Just before he left office at the end of his term, Trump pardoned him on January 20, 2021.
