As of right now, the 2022 primary election season is on track to be the worst for incumbent House members in decades.
Axios reports that 11 House members (7 Republicans and 4 Democrats) have been defeated in their respective primaries so far, with 10 incumbents losing because they were pitted against a colleague as a result of redistricting. Thirteen sitting House members were defeated in the 2020 primary election, marking the largest number of incumbent defeats in a non-redistricting year since 1974.
The Democrats are encouraged by early polls that show promising results for the upcoming midterm elections.
Rep. Sean Casten (D-IL) beat out progressive incumbent Rep. Marie Newman (D-IL) for the party’s nomination after much of Newman’s district was folded into Casten’s. As a result of the population decline shown by the 2020 United States census, Illinois lost a congressional seat for the first time in over 200 years.
After former president Donald Trump backed their opponents in the primary, several sitting officials faced difficult reelection campaigns. Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) lost the Republican primary for Michigan’s 3rd Congressional District to John Gibbs, a former senior official in the Department of Housing and Urban Development under the Trump administration.
On August 23, New York’s 12th Congressional District will choose between Democratic incumbents Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler.

Representatives Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Mondaire Jones (D-GA) are two other incumbents who could lose their seats (D-NY). Harriet Hageman, who has Trump’s support, is challenging Cheney, one of two Republican members on the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 riot.
According to Larry Sabato’s Crystal Ball, the loss of 14 incumbents would be the most since 1992, when 19 incumbents failed to win renomination.
