Actor Idris Elba admits that his new film, “Beast,” wasn’t exactly a family affair because he refused to cast his daughter, Isan, who is 20 years old.

In the film, Elba plays a widowed father who takes his two daughters on a trip to a South African game reserve, where they get into a fight with a rogue lion. Elba has said that his own daughter tried out for the role of the father’s daughter.

Elba said on the August 11 episode of “The Breakfast Club” radio show, “Interestingly enough, my daughter auditioned for this role, she wants to be an actress and she wanted — she auditioned.” See video below!

Unfortunately for Isan, she was mistaken if she thought her family ties would help her land the part. For better chemistry between Elba and the lead, another woman was cast.

Ultimately, “it came down to chemistry,” Elba said. In the words of the father: “You know, my daughter, she was great, but the relationship in the film and the relationship with my daughter was — the chemistry wasn’t right for film, weirdly enough.”

The decision wasn’t without its drawbacks. “My daughter didn’t speak to me for about three weeks,” Elba said.

Elba and director Baltasar Kormákur were trusted by “Beast” producer Will Packer, who expressed his admiration for Elba’s “tough” decision on the radio show.

Packer said of Isan Elba’s audition, “She was very good, very close.” Some of the subtleties of that real-life relationship just don’t come across on screen, as Idris points out.

It appears that she has gotten over her initial shock.

Elba said, “I’m really proud of her to go through that.” And then not get the part, but show up for the opening night show anyway.
