Mike Rhule Won’t Rule Out Bringing Back Cam Newton Without Darneold Injury

Newton could make an appearance at Carolina.

Possibly Newton could have another get-together in the Carolinas.

Coach Matt Rhule addressed the media after quarterback Sam Darnold was carted off the field in the final preseason game against the Bills on Friday and ruled out for four to six weeks with an ankle injury.

Many people were wondering if former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton would be available for re-signing with Rhule.

Rhule said, “Scott (Fitterer) and I would discuss that.” Cam Newton, if he were here, would have to comment on that. Many factors would need consideration. My thoughts on Cam are well known to you all. Wonderful memories of our time together. It’s probably too soon to make any definitive statements about that.

Considering the length of Darnold’s absence, the Panthers will have to rely on Baker Mayfield or PJ Walker under center. Rookie quarterback Matt Corral suffered a season-ending injury when he tore the Lisfranc ligament in his left foot.

Rhule lauded Mayfield’s ball-moving skills after Friday’s game, when the quarterback threw for 89 yards on 9-of-15 passing and two touchdowns. Walker, who Rhule saw play in a game, completed eight of ten passes for 50 yards on ten attempts.

With the preseason behind them, the Panthers will consider all of their options as they try to find the best possible backup quarterback for their September 11 season opener against the Browns.
