Since his teen idol days as lead singer of The Beatles, Paul McCartney has been the subject of many girls’ crushes, yet his personal life has seen both highs and lows.

McCartney has revealed that he “cried for a year” after the death of Linda, his first wife, from breast cancer in 1998. He later divorced ex-model wife Heather Mills in a bitter split over which he paid her $50 million.

The history of Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell’s marriage is detailed below, beginning with their first kiss on the beach and ending with their nuptials in front of their closest friends and family.

This meeting between Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell took place in the summer of 2007.

They hit it off because of how similarly they lived. Shevell’s second cousin, Barbara Walters, has commented, “He doesn’t like a big social life; nor does she.”

McCartney’s first public display of affection for Shevell came during the midst of his highly publicized divorce from former model Mills.

He told PEOPLE, “I’m in a good place, I think,” before the performance.

Abbey Road, where The Beatles produced their 1969 album, was the location where the two were spotted enjoying a stroll. During their time in London, they also met up with James McCartney, Paul’s son.

On November 25th, 2008, Paul McCartney discusses his relationship with Nancy Shevell for the first time.

During an interview with the Sunday Times, McCartney briefly discussed his romance with Shevell, adding, “I just like being in love.”

Shevell, too, avoided making any complicated remarks about their connection. When asked about the difficulties of dating a public figure, As Shevell put it, “To top it all off, I’m the owner of a trucking company and the father of a 16-year-old child who beat cancer. This is what we call pressure.”

The year 2011 finds Paul McCartney searching for an engagement ring for Nancy Shevell.

McCartney picked out a rare, 5-carat diamond set in a platinum, Art Deco-style mounting with black onyx strips from Lane’s private collection. The jeweler remarked, “It has a great vintage vibe to it.” The combination of “very romantic, sophisticated, and glamorous” with “a little of cool sparkle and rock and roll” is a winning combination.

On May 2, 2011, Paul McCartney’s fiancée Nancy Shevell displayed the ring he had given her.

In lieu of a traditional engagement announcement, Shevell and McCartney quietly became engaged. On the contrary, she discreetly put on her ring during the 2011 Met Gala in New York City. She wore it on her right hand so as not to overshadow Stella, who was also helping organize the occasion.

A visitor told PEOPLE that she “looked incredibly pleased and comfortable.”

McCartney and Shevell, who had been dating for four years when the engagement ring was spotted, are engaged.

On May 9th, 2011, Paul McCartney proposed to Nancy Shevell, who claims to have been taken by surprise.

Describing her engagement to the New York Post, Shevell claimed it was “a huge surprise.”

She claimed the two had yet to decide on a date for their nuptials other than that they would be “soon” and the guest list would include “only our family.” And don’t ask me what I’ll wear,” Shevell continued, “because how fancy do you get to stand before a Justice of the Peace in his chambers?”

Together, Shevell and McCartney enjoyed the Las Vegas performance of LOVE, the Cirque du Soleil tribute to the Beatles. They enjoyed every song together and were in the audience when Paul McCartney exclaimed, “What an evening.”

They were caught kissing at the after party.

McCartney and Shevell announced their engagement with a notice outside London’s Old Marylebone Town Hall, the same location where he wed his first wife in 1969.

They were thrilled to meet Superintendent Registrar Alison Cathcart at the last minute. Cathcart tells PEOPLE, “They were gorgeous, extremely easygoing and quite charming and clearly in love with each other.”

They did not give a certain date for the wedding.

McCartney and Shevell were wed in a small, intimate ceremony at Old Marylebone Town Hall in the afternoon, when they were met with shouts from their guests.

Stella, Paul’s daughter, created both the wedding gown and her father’s outfit. Mary, his eldest daughter, was the official photographer, and Beatrice, his youngest, was the flower girl. James, Paul’s only son, and Arlen, Shevell’s son, both gave toasts to the pair at the reception. Mike McGear, Paul’s brother, was the best man.

Shevell’s cousin Walters, Ringo Starr and wife Barbara Bach, and Olivia Harrison, George Harrison’s widow, were also present to show their support for the pair.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds went to McCartney’s house for a small celebration with vegetarian food. Both a vegan cake and a more conventional one were offered to guests at the wedding reception.

At the wedding reception, McCartney also debuted a new song written just for his new wife. McGear remarked, “They had a great dance together.” He elaborated on the nuptials by saying, “Fabulous. Beautiful. Just beautiful and serene. Superbly attractive atmosphere. He is a wonderful brother, and I am thrilled for him.”

The musician drank a toast in honor of John Lennon on the occasion of his 71st birthday.

Soon after their wedding, the couple jetted out to Mustique, a Caribbean island, for a honeymoon. The Firefly, a tiny resort with just five rooms, was their destination of choice.

During the investiture ceremony held at Buckingham Palace on May 4, 2018, Nancy Shevell was there alongside Paul McCartney.

McCartney was honored by the British monarchy as a Companion of Honour in 2018 for his many musical contributions. Shevell accompanied him to the royal event in London’s Buckingham Palace.

Paul McCartney will play at Nancy Shevell’s holiday dinner on November 27, 2019.

McCartney showed that he is the most popular person at the office Christmas party as well as a rock star. He sang “I Saw Her Standing There” as an unexpected surprise for Shevell and her coworkers at New England Motor Freight.

McCartney and Shevell stayed until midnight, when the celebration finally ended, and they both danced to Beyoncé’s “Crazy in Love.”
