I haven’t written about Southwest Airlines in a while. I grew up traveling with the carrier because of its hub at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL). Southwest has affordable one-way ticket options, so I’ll surely utilize them this fall if I need to travel back home.

Consider this timely offer from Southwest if you need to make last-minute travel arrangements this fall or if you think you’ll need a getaway after the holidays. For travel booked by August 26th, the promotion offers one-way Wanna Get Away flights beginning at $59 and Wanna Get Away Plus fares as low as $79.

exemplary flights

If your travel dates are open, I’d advise looking through Southwest’s Low Fare Calendar based on your intended location and preferred month of travel.

From there, you can easily find out when the cheapest flights are offered along your route. One-way flights from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) can be found for as little as $59, as an example.

Starting at $59, you may fly from Midway International Airport (MDW) to Nashville International Airport (BNA).

Starting at $78 from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Miami International Airport (MIA).

Starting at $78 one-way, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Denver International Airport (DEN).

Starting at $78 are flights from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

LGA to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) begins at $106. Orlando International Airport (MCO) to LGA begins at $94. MDW to AUS begins at $94.

Although this bargain is advertised as being for one-way travel, you can still use the Low Fare Calendar to search for round-trip travel and are likely to find the same-priced flight each way. For instance, there are many flights for $78 on Tuesdays and Wednesdays in October that you might combine to make a round trip from Los Angeles to Denver, as shown below.

Choose the most convenient trip dates after that, and be sure you choose the least fare option. In this instance, the Wanna Get Away price is available for $78 roundtrip. Alternately, you could upgrade to the Wanna Get Away Plus fare for $20.

Ensure that the round-trip flight displays two one-way rates for $78 each after choosing your flights.

The cost of the round-trip flight in this instance is $156, which also includes $38 in taxes and fees.

Note that the cost of the identical flight would be $11.20 in taxes and fees in addition to 9,788 Rapid Rewards points. Considering that TPG currently values Rapid Rewards points at 1.5 cents each, employing points in this situation would result in negligible savings. Consequently, I advise taking advantage of this discount and paying the cash fare. Save your points for a redemption that will enable you to make more financial savings.

The two cheapest fare kinds offered by the carrier, Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus, are included in this sale. Although the costs are comparable, Wanna Get Away Plus gives customers a better earning rate (8 points for every $1 spent) and permits same-day flight adjustments. Two free checked bags and two free carryon items are included in all Southwest fares.

enhance your purchase

Use a credit card that offers bonus points for airfare purchases if you book this deal. Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card (all of which earn 3 points for every dollar spent on Southwest products), or Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card are all options for frequent flyers of Southwest (2 points per dollar on Southwest purchases). Alternately, consider the Citi Prestige® Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points for $1 spent on airfare booked directly with an airline or through American Express Travel) (5 points per dollar on airfare). For other suggestions on maximizing your airline purchases, see this page.

To sum up

Although you’ll need to look around for this offer, you can discover flights for as little as $59 on some Southwest itineraries. For travel through mid-February, rates are in effect. With this offer, you have the benefit of time since travel can be scheduled through August 26. Even still, these inexpensive flights probably won’t last long, so make sure to reserve as soon as possible.
